A World Away...

Students, parents, and teachers at Oloolaimutia Elementary School face challenges impossible for most of us to imagine. In turn, some of the most basic services that we take for granted in the United States, especially in Laguna Beach, are unimaginable to them. Our mission is to close that gap, to provide Oloolaimutia with some basic amenities, and to raise awareness of their challenges:
                               685 - number of students
                              25% - female students
                                   9 - number of teachers
                          $1,000 - teacher's annual salary
15km - some students' daily walk to and from school
                                    1 - fully-furnished classroom

Vast Distances
Because Oloolaimutia is the only school in the region, some students walk 15km round trip everyday to attend school.  Because of the poverty in the region, many make the trip barefoot.
Lack of Funding
The average teacher in Kenya earns roughly US$1,000 a year.  Of the 9 teachers at Oloolaimutia, only 6 are paid by the government.  The other 3 are supported by the local community.
Overcrowding

In a school of 685 students, there are only 10 classrooms and 9 teachers.
Poor Facilities
Most rooms are still poorly furnished, and many students still sit on the concrete floor.  However, the Laguna Maasai Partnership was proud to supply the classrooms with electricity and desks. To read more about our past successes, click here.
