Summer 2023:
FLOW Rain Barrel Auction

The Laguna Maasai Partnership has joined forces with FLOW, LBHS' environmental advocacy and service program, to auction eight decorated Rain Barrels to the community. All proceeds went towards building a $31,000 well in Oloolaimutia, providing sorely needed water for drinking, sanitation, and food.

2018-Present:
Scholarship Program

Since 2018, the Laguna Maasai Partnership has directly subsidized two students' secondary school and college education, inaccessible for most Kenyans.

Gladys, who began her third year of high school in 2019, was nearly married off by her father. Working with her teacher Ms. Gladys Kiu, we helped her continue her education. She currently studies medicine at Kenyatta University in Nairobi.
Leonard began high school in 2018 and has seen tremendous academic growth in secondary school. He intends to study medicine.

2015: Generator Project

Other than a solar panel to power essential administrative functions, there was no electricity at Oloolaimutia Elementary School. For the 685 students, the classrooms would go dark when the sun sets, students studied by candlelight in the dormitories, and there were no security lights at night. Our mission was to raise $15,000 to help them purchase a wind-solar hybrid generator to provide 5,000 Watts of electricity per day.

Why Wind/Solar?

In addition to being emission-free and sustainable, a wind-solar hybrid generator is consistent and reliable, rain or shine. The solar panel is efficient and durable, and the wind turbine will generate power even at night or during poor weather. On average, it will generate energy to power all of the following every day:

20 classroom lights for 5 hours per day
10 laptops for 5 hours per day
8 dormitory lights for 5 hours per evening
6 exterior security lights for 8 hours per night

2014: A Class Set of New Desks

During the 2013 to 2014 school year, our Partnership succeeded in raising $3,500 to provide a full set of 75 desks to the 4th grade class of the Oloolaimutia Elementary School. The entire student body of LBHS contributed to the coin drive, while many donors sponsored entire desks outright.
The desks were locally-made in Kenya and contributed to the region's economy. The students and their parents were delighted the day the desks were delivered, and seeing this only made us dream bigger.
